This book began strongly by starting off showing the main character's, Mariam, relationship with her mother. "Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman" (p 7 Housseini). mariam's mother, Nana says this to Mariam and i thought this quote really stood out on me for the first section on this book. Nana was talking about Mariam's father, Jalil, who left Nana and her when she was born. Only on occasions does Jalil visit. I feel like the quote will become important to Mariam later on the story because she might later learn if that idea is true or not. Mariam is a character with high expectations of her father. Her father is a wealthy man in Afghanistan and is always on business trips. She is also a person that doesn't like to accept the truth. Mariam's mother tells Mariam her father is lieing and she never believes her. What i like about Mariam, is that she is always thinks positive even if she gets disappoited.

I am really enjoying this book and it really gets emotional. In chapter 5, Nana hangs herself and how Mariam dealt with it made me sad. The book hasn't started talking about war, but my guess is that maybe her father is in the topic of superpowers because the book explained that he is a wealthy man who has many businesses. I cant wait to find out if her dad is a good person in Mariam's life or not.
