Snow Falling on Cedars (Guterson)

One quote that stood out to me was when Ishmael was described in page 35. It said, "...he had this view of things--that most human activity was utter folly, his own included, and that his existence in the world made others nervous." I think this quotes shows how depressed and pessimistic he is and it makes people feel really sad for him. He thinks because of his amputated arm, people around him feel awkward and he hates that. He says he could wear a sleeveless shirt and his scar would surely repel people, but he doesn't want to go to such extremes. He usually wears full sleeve shirts that cover his scar.

This also connects with the topic of war because he is a war veteran. He becomes very angry about life and is irritated with anyone around him. He has 'veteran's cynicism.' He has witnessed people with their heads cut open and their brains spilling out. These things have left him traumatized and he feels that everything around him in his post-war life is a joke.
